Thats a big book, Keg :unsure

Adrian mcKintys 'Cold, cold Ground' & Walter Mosleys 'all I did was kill my man' are the two best crime novels I've read the last few months. There's also a book floating about called 'art class' by Andrew Richardson.

Yeah, and there's more crap from where that came from.

Alternatively, anything by Richard Laymon does it for me :thumb

I realise this may be obvious to most but I think it bears repeating-a no. 1 bestselling book-with,of course, some notable exceptions, will usually not be very good!
Its no different to most other things that are popular.
As far as erotica is concerned,if youre a man, just read The Marquis de Sades books and have done with it!!
    After that everything is tame.

But,BY FAR,the worst books published imho, are crime books.

Dont get me wrong, there are many good ones-I love Scandinavian crime books, but there are some that actually get to no 1 and you read them out of curiosity and you think,WOW-any cunt could have written this crap!

The plots are so stupid, the characters one-dimensional,the fight scenes numerous and tedious and there is a breathtaking lack of suspense-I mean,FFS,surely either there must be suspense OR a great plot OR an interesting detective!!??

And I guess thats the essence of whether a book is good or not.
If you believe that it could have been written by many other people...then its crap....but if you feel it could only have been written by that author,or maybe a few others, its probably good

As far as womens erotica is concerned,I must admit ODM made me smile when he said that the sex was tame and it was mostly talking!!
YEP,thats what womens erotica is,isnt it?
    Not to mention married life.

Excellent point mate. I understand that, for women, 80% of sex is what goes on in the head (insert your own blow job joke here) and I was prepared for an element of preamble and sexual tension but I've heard women talking about how it's "opened their eyes" and shit like that. Now I understand that women don't generally surf the net for porn in the same way as men do so I'm quite sure that some of the shit that we get to see would certainly open their eyes, but probably the most shocking thing in the book is the part of the contract that says, "would you accept anal or vaginal fisting?" She says, "No you can fuck that right off" and that's it. A few slaps on the arse later and the book's finished.

I just thought women were more enlightened about sex these days. It would seem that most of them aren't.

Hmmmmm,I am pretty sure that women are definitely sexually enlightened these days.

Therefore, starting with that premise,Id suggest that the women who are saying this book has opened their eyes are from that group of women who are in relationships with men who arent that interested in sex-they do exist!-or,at least,no longer fancy their wives enough to want to try out anything theyve seen on the internet.

That did occur to me but I work in an environment with a lot of women in and none of them seemed to offer a differing opinion. I was at least expecting the youngest (free-est and single-est) one to come in and question what all the fucking fuss was about, but she seemed engrossed as well.

Like I said, it's the emperor's new clothes syndrome. Nobody wants to be the one to offer a differing opinion and, obviously, my opinion is not valid because I'm a bloke. I was pleased to see that there are enough people (women) out there who agree with me though having done a search on youtube.

Was in waterstones earlier & overheard a conversation half way through between a group of women & an assistant, with him saying 'we're totally sold out, both shops. All of our shops are waiting for a limited delivery on wednesaday but they're nearly gone on waiting lists'.
When hearing them surmise that there should also be a section for 'internet lit' I can only assume they were asking for '50 shades'
Talking to my best mates wife about it last night, she was rushing home to carry on reading it & she doesnt read much at all, says its brilliant. Mind you I'd just been trying to save tgheir marriage so the 2 might be linked :embarassed
    Anyway, Youngs looking better

As usual, the hype has overtaken the reality.

When was the last time you queued to see a blockbuster that was actually any good? It's one of those things (like lady Di's head going through a steering wheel) where you may have to wait a year or two for the realistic view to kick in but it will in the end.

Overhype. What are you going to do if you're a repressed woman and all of your friends are saying how good it is? Are you going to stand up and say, "actually, it's not very good" or are you just going to go with the flow?

Yes they actually do. You need to drag your head out of your gay porn collection and get out into the real world every now and again.
