Reckon he's been a bit hard done by, personally. Rather than him taking the flak, surely the blame should lie with Sun Bets for offering stupid bets like that. Anything depending on a decision by one individual is always open to this kind of thing.

Once he found out they were offering odds on him eating a pie, he must have known some people (regardless of whether or not they were friends of his) would bet on it. So he then has the choice, eat a pie and win some punters some money, or don't eat a pie and give the bookies a profit. If the bookies don't like it, don't offer it. It's not like backing someone to miss a penalty, or get sent off or anything like that - anything that influences the outcome of the match would be different, obviously. This had no influence on the match, and it's unfair of the bookies to have put him in that position.

I heard about this on the radio on the way home. As you say RC, what the fuck are the bookies even thinking about. Aren't there enough ridiculous markets without bollocks like this?

There is a difference between laughing at yourself - and making an arse of yourself (and your employees)

He made an arse of himself - and the people who pay him

    No sympathy from me

He's been a bit daft, no more than that. Do you not think there should be serious questions asked of Sun Bets though for putting up stupid markets like that which have contributed to this situation?

Sun bets can do what they like

It's up to the individual concerned to decide if they are mocking him or not ?

Who said anything about them mocking him? He's left Sutton due to an investigation by the FA and the Gambling Commission.

My point, as I've already said once but I'll repeat as you seem to have missed it, is that once he found out they were offering odds on him eating a pie, he must have known some people (regardless of whether or not they were friends of his) would bet on it. So he then has the choice, eat a pie and win some punters some money, or don't eat a pie and give the bookies a profit. If they don't offer stupid markets like that, individual players don't get put in an awkward position, it's unfair on them.

We're not talking something like conceding a goal, missing a penalty, etc., which can also win or lose punters money, but are all part of the game. We're talking a stupid novelty bet by the betting site of a shit rag of a newspaper.

Yes, he could have (and no doubt now wishes he had) just taken the simple option of doing what everyone expects and not eating a pie, but if Sun Bets put the bet out there to get them some publicity, they can't complain if he decides to play along with it. Any market available to bet on shouldn't be subject to a decision which can be made freely by one individual person. You could maybe argue that certain markets where the individuals concerned are so famous as to not even be aware of or influenced by it, something like the name of the next royal baby, are OK. But here, Sun Bets were the sponsors of the match, offering a market specifically concerning, and open to influence by, a player involved in that match. They have to take a large share of the blame for what's happened.

That's what this is about, not about whether anyone's taking the piss and hurting his feelings.

And he bought his employees into disrepute as a result

What I am saying is that a grown up adult has to take responsibility for his actions

    If that is "twisted"

I would love to know why ?

Actions which have ultimately done no harm to anyone.

According to your viewpoint (which I don't particularly agree with), a company sets a public trap to mock an overweight man, he takes the bait, and as a result deserves to lose his job, while no blame whatsoever lies with the company that saw fit to set that trap. That's what's twisted.

When I saw it live I thought it was pretty hilarious, I thought "you greedy fat bastard!", and I was a bit disappointed to find out today that it was all pre-planned for the cameras.

Bit harsh to sack the fucker though, especially on the grounds of betting - the bet had absolutely nothing to do with on-field events and it was obviously done just for a laugh. The PC-obsessed wankers win again :wank:adolph

And he has said that the max bet they would lay was a fiver so it was hardly the coup of the fucking century, was it?

Strictly speaking I don't think he was sacked, he quit, although probably a case of walking before he was pushed.

Officially he offered his resignation, which was accepted.

Technically he was sacked (the manager confirmed he was told to offer his resignation).

    They did !!!

Not to sure what is to debate - they did

They set odds on him to eat a pie -- for business reasons

    Yes sadly he did

Unfortunately yes - because he did his employers great harm

If you think this - then don't ever use this company - they will soon go out of business - thats the best way to deal with these people

You could've saved a lot of typing if you'd just put "Business comes first, fuck compassion and fuck you fat man", it seems to be the general gist of your argument.

    Goodnight.

    NO

    I am NOT a socialist

The gist of my argument is that a grown up adult should be responsible for his actions

He was set up - he fell for it

I am sorry - he was set up

    he fell for it

and has no-one else to blame but himself

    And when you WAKE UP

Will you see that I am right

Why is the idea that grown up people should take responsibility for their actions so conversional ??
