    I see where your confusion is, it's the "is only penalised if, at the moment the balltouches or is played by one of his team" which was the issue I had with the explanation when I first read the post in your link and why I was ranting about the ball being played forward. It doesn't matter that you're in an offside position when your mate touches the ball. You can stand on the oppositions bye-line all day while two of your players merrily play the ball to each other for 90 minutes and you'll never be offside (as long as you're not interfering with the keeper - oooo er missis) and that's because you're not "active". The only time it matters is when you become involved. In your scenario, it can be argued that he's sought an advantage but he only becomes active when the ball is played to him and, at that stage he's onside.
